When you start new project consider using something like "faraday". It probably would require to write a bit more code, but you will not fight against library you've chosen. It's very hard to deal with "activeresource" and hist "opinionated" approach to REST API implementation. It works for simple REST CRUD and that's all. No nested resources support, no flexibility for mapping urls to resources classes, etc. It seems its development is stuck nowadays (2014-04-13). So, I'd suggest to avoid its usage.
