So far I have tried both, rails_admin and active_admin. And maybe rails_admin is just fine for simple projects, and looks quite simple, but when you need to do something more complex it's just gets to much overhead. I've started my project with rails_admin, but later moved to active_admin. So I first suggest to try active_admin - this will save you tons of time.
