There seem to be a lot of rumors that the watir project is dead, but nothing could be farther from the truth. However, much of the community is moving to using watir-webdriver (the Watir API built on top of webdriver's ruby hooks) which provides better cross browser support. The original watir lives on (and is being renamed 'watir-classic') however because there are some situations where it's win32ole based driver works far better than webdriver's ie driver does. So some users stick with it for IE testing and use watir-webdriver for Firefox, Chrome etc.

A very effective combination is Cucumber + Watir + PageObjects (https://github.com/cheezy/page-object)
