There's a lot of open issues
Expose fully RESTful HTTP APIs including code-on-demand so client can intelligent present most appropriate UI element for each property & perform arbitrary, non-authorative, client-side validations before submitting data to the API server.

RubyBHL is a simple but flexible request/response wrapper for the Biodiversity Heritage Libary API. It includes (some) validation for request formatting. It has excellent unit-test coverage.

Simple Ruby Service is a lightweight framework for creating Services and Service Objects (SOs) in Ruby. The framework makes Services and SOs look and feel like ActiveModels, complete with: 1. validations and robust error handling; 2. workflows and method chaining; and 3. consistent interfaces. Additionally, Simple Ruby Service Objects can stand in for Procs, wherever Procs are expected (via ducktyping).

Most web applications have a lot of before/after hooks that occur when working with objects: sending a welcome email on registration, incrementing/decrementing counter caches, trigger validation on remote web services. When implemented using callbacks, all these occur without the developer knowing about them. A simple change in one area of the code can have a huge impact somewhere else. Inspiration for this came from http://blog.teksol.info/2010/09/28/unintented-consequences-the-pitfalls-of-activerecord-callbacks.html and http://jamesgolick.com/2010/3/14/crazy-heretical-and-awesome-the-way-i-write-rails-apps.html

Shoulda Matchmakers generates regression specs for existing ActiveRecord models and ActionController controllers using Shoulda Matchers. It generates specs for model validations, associations, nested attributes, enum definitions, attribute serialization, database columns and database indexes as well as controller REST routes, and before/after/around actions/filters. It can also generate FactoryGirl factories containing the minimum attributes required for the factory to create a valid object. Shoulda Matchmakers is based on the Regressor gem by Erwin Schens.
